TN local body election results: The nine districts of Tamil Nadu that went to the polls in two phases are Chengalpattu, Tenkasi, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Ranipet, Villupuram, Tiruppatur, Tirunelveli, and Kallakuruchi.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission is counting votes polled in the rural local body elections in nine reorganised districts on Tuesday. Counting began at 74 counting centres at 8 am. 

There were 27,003 posts up for election in these districts. 

The results will be published on the commission's website, http://tnsec.tn.nic.in, as soon as they are announced. 


In addition to 31,245 officials working to count the votes, the commission has deployed 6,228 police officers to provide security.  CCTV cameras are being used to monitor the entire process.

  • The AIADMK holds lead in 34 panchayat union ward member seats, PMK - 6, AMMK - 2, Independents - 13 and BJP -1. 
  • DMK is ahead in 197 panchayat union ward member seats, MDMK - 4, Congress - 5, VCK - 2. 
  • According to The Times of India, MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is leading in 88 out of 140 district panchayat ward member seats, Congress - 5.
  • The AIADMK is leading in three wards while its ally BJP in one. PMK which contested polls alone leads in one district panchayat ward.
  • DMK has won the 16th ward of the Madurai district panchayat.
  • Three DMK candidates from Kallakurichi district and two from Vellore district have been elected unopposed as panchayat union ward members.
  • The counting process at a centre in Vellore district's Katpadi was delayed after candidates complained that the seal in a ballot box had been misplaced.
  • As part of the counting process, officials first sorted ballots for four different positions - panchayat union ward members, district panchayat ward members, village panchayat presidents, and village panchayat ward members. Afterwards, the sorted ballots were bundled into 50 and taken to the counting centre for detailed counting. The whole process was done in front of candidates, their agents and persons authorised by the state election commission.

Rural local body elections were conducted in two phases in nine districts for 27,003 posts.

In the first phase, held on October 6, votes were cast for 78 district panchayat ward member posts, 755 panchayat union ward member posts, 1,577 village panchayat president posts, and 12,252 village panchayat ward and member posts. The second phase took place on October 9, for the election of 62 district panchayat ward members, 626 panchayat union ward members, 1,324 village panchayat presidents, and 10,329 village panchayat ward members.

In the first phase, 77.4 per cent of voters participated while in the second phase, the number stood at 78.5 per cent.

Nearly 80,000 candidates ran and 2,981 won unopposed, including 119 village panchayat union presidents, five panchayat union ward members, and two district panchayat union ward members.
